Regensburg with it's 150.000 habitants is the fourth biggest city in Bavaria. It was founded as roman legionary fortress Castra Regina (camp at the Regen) of the III. legion in the period of government of the emperor Marc Aurel. In the 6. century a. Chr. Regensburg (at that time it was named Reganespurc) became the first bavarian capital und 739 a. Chr. Regensburg was declared as diocese.

In the 12. and 13. century Regensburg became one of the most prosperous cities with the most inhabitants.



From 1135 - 1146 the Steineren Brücke (Stone bridge) was built (in the Photo above on the left side), which is also today known as the biggest landmark of the city.

In the year 1245 Regensburg was designated a "freie Reichsstadt" ( free city of the Reich) by the emperor Friedrich 2nd, which it remains till 1803. From 1663 to 1806 the perpetual Reichstag resides in Regensburg until the "Heilige Römische Reich Deutscher Nation" (Holy Roman Reich of German Nation) is dissolved in 1806.

In 1838 Regensburg became captial of the area Oberpfalz and Regensburg, which conforms the Regierungsbezirk Oberpfalz of today. 1946 Regensburg becomes a big city, which gets an own University in 1965 (the 4th in bavaria).

A Polytechnic is added in 1971, named "University of applied sciences". It affords mainly technical study paths as Computer Science, Mathematics, Electronics and nearly all Computer Scientists and Mathematicans from Visu-IT! have studied there.

Regensburg is known as the biggest preserved middle age city in Germany. There are many sight seeings in and out of the city. The Steinerne Brücke with the historic Wurstkuchl, the Cathedral St. Peter, the old townhall with the Reichssaal, the narrow side streets of the oly city or the Walhalla in the near Donaustauf (left Picture), in Regensburg there is much to see.

And there is a lot of culture. The Regensburger Domspatzen are a trademark for Regensburg since a long time. Many theaters and stages for minor arts provide a broad diversified choice of culture. Additionally the Regensburger Schlossfestspiele and the yearly Jazz-Weekend in summer should not be unmentioned.
